My neighbor said my caulk line looked like a kid did it

I was sealing my kitchen backsplash last month and thought a thick bead was better for coverage. My neighbor Frank, who used to do tile work, came over and said, 'That line is so fat, a kid could have done it with a crayon.' I was annoyed but he showed me how to use masking tape and a damp finger for a clean, thin line. It took me 15 extra minutes but looks way more professional. Has anyone else gotten a piece of advice that stung at first but actually helped?

Frank's right, that thin line makes all the difference. My uncle said my first grout job looked like I used oatmeal.

My dad used to say the same thing about painting trim. That tiny gap between the wall and the woodwork, maybe an eighth of an inch, is what separates a clean job from a messy one. It's wild how those small details in any craft, from tile work to woodworking, are what our eyes notice first.

Remember when everyone had that one friend who thought more WD-40 fixed any squeak? My buddy was like that with wood glue on a wobbly chair, slathering it on like frosting. I told him it looked like a preschool art project and he got so mad. But that mess forced him to learn about clamping pressure and wiping the squeeze-out, and now his repairs are actually solid. Sometimes the blunt comment is what pushes you to learn the right method.
