Changed my mind about painting bathroom tile

I was dead set against painting bathroom tile for years. Thought it was a half-baked fix that would peel off in six months. Then my neighbor Gary, who restores old houses for a living, showed me his bathroom he did two years ago. He used a two-part epoxy primer and a urethane top coat, not the cheap stuff from the hardware store. Said the key is etching the tile with acid first and giving it a full week to cure before any water hits it. His tiles still looked brand new with no chips or peeling. I tried it on my own 1970s pink bathroom tile last month and so far so good. Anyone else have luck with this method or did I just get lucky?

Gary knows his stuff for sure, that two-part epoxy method sounds solid. Glad it worked out for you so far, that 70s pink tile is a beast to deal with lol.

Watch out for moisture getting trapped behind the epoxy if the tile has any hairline cracks you can't see with the naked eye - trapped moisture makes the whole thing bubble up from underneath eventually.

Tbh Gary's probably the type who could paint a battleship and have it last forever.
