Tried the 'reverse outline' trick for my fantasy novel after 3 years of writer's block

I kept getting stuck in the middle of chapters because I had no idea where the plot was going next. A guy on a writing podcast suggested doing a outline of what you already wrote to find the hidden structure. Has anyone else used this to break through a block? What other weird tricks actually worked for you?

Doesn't this sound a lot like how we figure out our own past by looking back at what we actually did?

@jamiew53 you really hit on something there. It's like when you look back on old photos and realize you were actually having a good time even though you remember it being stressful. The whole "we are what we do" thing is surprisingly true when you stop and think about it.
