Vent: My coworker said to never let a customer 'just look' at the back room...

She told me this last month after a guy at the hardware store asked to see our extra stock. I let him peek and he walked out with three Milwaukee drill kits worth over $600. We checked the cameras and he just put them in his coat while I was helping another person. Now I have to explain the loss to my manager. Has anyone else had a customer pull something like this after you bent a simple rule?

Man that really sucks, sorry you had to deal with that. It's crazy how fast people can take advantage of a simple act of trust. I've seen similar stuff where someone asks for a closer look at a high price item and just bolts out the door with it. Makes you feel awful and question every nice thing you do for a customer after that. Really hope your manager understands it was just a bad faith move from that guy.

Yeah, that's a solid way to shut it down.

Ugh, that's the worst. I started telling people the back is a staff-only zone for insurance reasons, shuts it down fast.
