That moment when a customer asked why her lights were dim and I realized I’d been skipping the voltage drop calc for 6 years

It hit me last Tuesday at a house in Pasadena when she said, 'my neighbor’s lights are way brighter and you wired ours,' and after I finally ran the numbers on her 150-foot run, I found out I’d been guessing at wire gauge since I started my shop, so has anyone else had a customer accidentally teach them a basic rule they should have known?

The real lesson here is how easy it is to coast on experience alone until someone forces you to double check your own work. You probably saved that customer a headache down the road with a fix that'll last another 20 years. Sometimes getting called out is the best training you can get.

Did you check voltage drop on your own house first or just customers?

Voltage drop on my own place? Hell no, I'm not that dedicated.
