A client tried to pay their invoice with a bag of coins and a check from 1998

This guy came into our office yesterday with a paper grocery bag full of loose change, said it was for his $1,200 tax prep bill. He also pulled out a checkbook that looked like it was from another century, no joke. My manager had to explain we can't take a check that's over 20 years old, and counting all that change would take hours. The guy got really mad and said money is money, which is true, but come on lol. Has anyone else had a customer try to pay a big bill with just coins?

I used to be more open to odd payments, but a guy once paid me with a mix of foreign coins and subway tokens. It took forever to sort out and I lost money on the deal. Now I get why businesses have clear rules.

But doesn't that kind of weird payment make for a better story than just another card swipe? I get the hassle, but sometimes the weird deals are the ones you remember. Clear rules are safe, but they also make every transaction feel the same. I'd take the occasional headache if it meant things were a bit more interesting.

Yeah but that hassle is what makes a real deal. Cards just feel like handing over digital numbers, but weird payments mean you actually had to work something out with another person. The story is worth more than the time you lost.
