My bridal makeup blunder changed how I prep for appointments
I was finishing up a client's makeup for her big day, and under my ring lights, everything seemed flawless. We walked out to her car so she could grab something, and in the sun, her contour looked like muddy stripes (seriously, it was bad). That moment hit me hard because I'd never thought about how artificial light can lie. Now, before any client leaves, I have them step outside with me for a quick look in daylight. It only takes a minute, but it saves so much trouble later. I've even started asking about the event's lighting during the consult, which helps me plan better. This little routine has become my favorite new step because it just works. You'd think after years doing this I'd have known, but sometimes the obvious stuff sneaks up on you.

My studio lights tricked me for years too.

Yeah, "tricked me for years" is right. I thought my skills were awful until I realized the lights were the real issue (should have known).

Totally get this, heard a few artists talk about doing test shots with phone flash for evening weddings too. That harsh light shows up stuff ring lights hide, like over-powdering or foundation lines. Your daylight check is such a smart fix, lol, wish more people did it. Makes you wonder what other simple things we're all missing because our setup seems fine.
