Shoutout to the guy who showed me I was overworking my mix

I was finishing a patio in Grand Rapids last month and my buddy saw me adding water to the truck chute for what felt like the tenth time. He just said, 'You're fighting it, man. Let the slump do its job.' I realized I was making it way too wet, trying to get it to lay flat, which just made it bleed and set up weak. Now I trust the initial mix way more. Anyone else have a simple trick for judging slump without a test?

Yeah, the shovel trick is a good start, but what do you actually look for? I watch how it slides off, like if it kind of folds over itself instead of just plopping off in a wet blob, you're probably in the right zone. It's about that smooth slump, not a runny mess. Takes a few bad batches to really see the difference, honestly.

Just watch how it piles up on the shovel.
