That moment I realized I'd been using thermal paste wrong for years

I was at a client's office in Austin last month, swapping out a failed CPU on an old Dell Precision. I put a pea-sized dot like always, bolted the cooler on, and it still hit 95C at idle. After my fourth repaste, a buddy who builds servers looked over my shoulder and said 'dude, you're putting way too much pressure on that bracket.' Turns out I was over-tightening the cooler every single time, squeezing the paste out to nothing. He showed me the 'line method' for Intel chips and it dropped temps by 20 degrees. Has anyone else had that 'aha' moment where you realized a basic step was all wrong?

I read somewhere that most thermal paste application guides don't even mention mounting pressure, which is wild considering how much it matters. Over-tightening is such an easy trap to fall into when you're just trying to make sure everything is secure. Did you notice any weird uneven patterns on your old thermal paste after you pulled the cooler off?

Yeah mounting pressure is one of those things where you don't realize how much it matters till you mess it up. It's kind of like tightening lug nuts on a car, you can't just crank them down as hard as you can or you'll warp the rotor. There's a certain feel to getting it right, and it takes experience to know what that is.
