Serious question about thermal paste application methods

I've been building PCs for 5 years and always did the pea-sized dot method, but last week I tried spreading it with a credit card on a customer's Ryzen build. The temps dropped by 8 degrees Celsius under load, which seems way too big of a difference. Is the pea method really that much worse, or did I just get lucky with my new thermal paste batch?

8 degrees seems way too much for just changing your application method.

Read somewhere that a guy switched from rolling to spraying and saw a 6 degree drop in his temps. 8 is pushing it but maybe with the right equipment and timing it's doable.

What kind of application method are we even talking about here, @benclark? Like, did they switch from a brush to a spray rig, or from a sprayer to a roller? That detail matters because some methods just can't put down enough material to cause an 8 degree difference by themselves. I'd want to know the exact before and after before I'd believe that jump.
