A customer in Dallas told me 'it's just a fan noise' right before his CPU melted

He brought in his gaming rig last week (after ignoring the sound for a month, he said) and when I opened it, the thermal paste was dust and the heatsink was completely clogged, so what's the most stubborn 'it's fine' excuse you've had to argue against?

Yeah thermal paste turning to dust is a bad sign. I always tell people to clean their fans and heatsinks every six months, takes five minutes and saves you a huge headache later.

Wait, the thermal paste turned to actual dust? I didn't even know that was possible. That stuff must have been baking for years to completely dry out and crumble like that. How do you ignore a new noise for a whole month, especially when your whole computer is on the line? The stubbornness some people have with their tech is just amazing. What did he say when he saw the melted CPU?

Bet he just stared at it like a deer in headlights. Some people treat weird PC noises like a weird fridge hum, just something that happens. Honestly impressed the paste turned to straight up powder though, that's next level neglect.
