I just read that a single mature oak tree can support over 500 different insect species

I found this fact in a book from my local library called 'The Hidden Life of Trees'. It really hit me how planting native trees isn't just about carbon, it's about building a whole living system. Has anyone else come across a simple stat that changed how they see a part of climate action?

That book is fantastic! A stat that stuck with me is how one square meter of healthy soil can contain more life than all the humans on the planet. It made me stop using chemical fertilizers in my garden and start composting everything. Focusing on soil health feels like a direct way to support the whole local web of life.

But is all that soil life actually doing anything useful? It just seems like a lot of hype over dirt and worms. My plants grew fine before I worried about any of this.

But how do you even know if your soil is actually healthy? I've tried composting before but never felt sure it was working right. What signs do you look for in your garden to tell if the soil is getting better?
