My buddy in Bend said my gear list was 'overbuilt for a weekend' and it stuck with me.

We were packing for a quick trip to the Wallowas and he saw my 70-liter pack, full cook kit, and heavy tent. He just said, 'You know, you're carrying your house, not camping.' I've always thought more gear meant being ready, but that simple line made me look at my whole setup differently. Now I'm trying to figure out what I actually need for short trips. Anyone else have a moment that made them cut down their load?

What's the heaviest single item in your pack?

Ever weigh your shelter right after a long day? It sure feels like the heaviest thing by then.

The heaviest single item is usually my water, but that's not really gear. For actual gear, it's my shelter.
