My brother told me to skip the cheap sleeping pad and I should have listened
He said 'you'll freeze your butt off on that thing' when I showed him the $25 foam pad I got for a trip to the Adirondacks. I figured how bad could it be, it's just a pad. Well, two nights in with temps dropping into the 40s, and I was miserable. The cold from the ground came right through, and I barely slept. Ended up buying a decent inflatable pad at the camp store on day three for way more money. Now I get why the R-value matters. Anyone have a good budget pick for a pad that actually works in cooler weather?

Honestly that $25 foam pad is fine if you layer up your clothes.

That's a great way to freeze your butt off.

Layering up your clothes" sounds good until you try it. My buddy did that on a cheap pad last fall. He woke up at 3am shaking, said the cold just came up from the ground through all his layers. He spent the rest of the night sitting against a tree trying to get warm. That foam doesn't stop the heat from leaving your body.
