Finally got a perfect inset door reveal after 3 tries this week

Been fighting with this shaker cabinet build for a client in Akron. First two attempts had gaps that were uneven by like 1/16 inch. Third time I shimmed the hinge plates just right and the reveal came out dead even all around. I was ready to scrap the whole thing but it finally clicked. Anyone else spend way too long getting those tiny gaps perfect?

Hold up, I mean I get the satisfaction thing but maybe we're putting too much pressure on a 1/16 gap. In my experience most people walking into a kitchen can't tell if a reveal is perfectly even unless you point it out to them with a ruler. I've seen jobs where the gaps are a little off and the overall look is still totally fine once the hardware and countertops are in. Plus that extra time fussing with shims and hinge plates really adds up on labor costs if you're billing by the hour. Maybe it's just me but I'd rather save that energy for getting the squareness dead on or making sure the drawer slides are butter smooth.

Respectfully disagree @wells.karen, because a 1/16 gap here and there adds up to a kitchen that just doesn't have that crisp, custom look. If a client pays for high end cabinets, they expect every detail to be dialed in, not just the drawer action.

Dead on, a 16th you can hide with a light fixture.
