Showerthought: I was wrong about using hot glue for headbands

For years I used hot glue to attach headbands in my leather journals, thinking PVA was too slow. Last month, a journal I made in 2020 came back with the headband completely detached and the glue brittle. I switched back to traditional wheat paste and after three projects, the flexibility and hold are clearly better. Am I the only one who learned this the hard way?

Hot glue is so tempting for the quick fix. It just doesn't age well on materials that need to flex. The old school methods win for long term projects.

You mentioned wheat paste, but I've found that a good PVA, thinned a bit, works just as well for flexibility. It dries faster than paste for my workflow. The key is using an adhesive meant for porous materials.

@val949, what's your exact PVA to water ratio for thinning?
