Pro tip: don't let your book club pick a 900 page novel

Last month my book club chose a 900 page historical fiction book. We had 4 weeks to read it. I barely made it through 300 pages. The meeting was a mess. Half of us hadn't finished. The other half skimmed the last 400 pages. The discussion turned into people complaining about the length instead of talking about the story. We wasted $30 on a book most people hated. Has anyone else had a book club pick go totally off the rails because the page count was too high?

Did you guys try to switch to a shorter book halfway through? I used to think big books were always worth the time, but after a similar situation last year I totally get it now.

Wait, you switched books halfway through? That feels like admitting defeat before the third act even gets going. I just suffer through, maybe skip a few chapters if it drags.
