My kindle screen cracked and I had to finish the book on my phone

Last Tuesday I was reading a library copy of "Project Hail Mary" on my Kindle Paperwhite and the screen just went black with a crack right down the middle. I was 200 pages in and the hold list was 30 people long. I ended up squinting at my iPhone for 3 days till I finished it. Has anyone else had a device break at the worst possible time?

Did you try sticking it in rice like jamiew53 would suggest?

Did you at least mark your spot before the crack took the whole screen down, or were you just sitting there hoping it would flicker back to life? That's the real torture, not knowing if you're going to lose your place and have to guess where you were. Phone screens are brutal for long reading sessions, I'd rather wait for the library copy.

Used a paperclip to hold the page shut on my phone case once, kept my thumb pressed on the sentence I was at. Worked okay until the glass spiderwebbed over the whole screen and I couldn't see the text anyway. Eventually just took a photo of the page with my laptop camera and read from that because the phone was done for. Lost two full chapters that way, had to backtrack later when I got the library copy. Phone screens are just too fragile for the kind of reading that makes you forget you're holding something expensive.
