Visited the Library of Congress and noticed something odd about how people pick their books

Honestly, I'm with the people checking the index and footnotes first. A catchy cover blurb can be written by anyone, but the index tells you if they actually did their homework. Ngl, I've been burned too many times by a book that sounded great on the hook but turned out to be all fluff with zero substance. Like you said about the "bones of the research," that's where you see if they cite real sources or just name-drop a few big names. Tbh, a cool cover is just a marketing trick half the time.

I used to think ground penetrating radar was a waste of money for local digs

Please don't ask ME about buying tech gear - I'm the guy who spent $350 thinking he found an old well and it turned out to be a sewer pipe from the 1970s.

Rant: The guy who told me to skip the '90s X-Men run was completely wrong

Yeah, for real. Bad advice like that stings for a while.

Worst week I've ever had on a Cummins ISX rebuild

Oh man, the whole "save forty bucks" trap gets everyone at least once lol. I had a similar deal with a buddy who tried those no-name glow plugs on a 6.7 Powerstroke and they snapped off in the head after 150 miles. Cost him way more in machine shop time than the OEM ones would have been. Some stuff you just can't shortcut no matter how tempting the price is, especially when it involves high pressure fuel or anything that sees heat cycles.

Just realized I've been setting posts way too shallow in sandy soil

Checking moisture levels before pouring is honestly one of those things that sounds obsessive until you’ve had a post go crooked after a big rain. It’s like seasoning a cast iron pan (you know, you think it’s fine until it rusts on you). If it’s too wet, I just cover the hole with a piece of plywood and let it sit for a day. That little bit of patience makes the concrete set way more even.
