Taking layouts the old way vs. now with a laser

Back in '97 I was still snapping chalk lines with a partner for every flange. Now I use a Rotolazer on most jobs, cut my setup time in half. Still keep the chalk box handy though, lasers don't work in direct sun.

Lasers are great but yeah, direct sun kills 'em every time...

Me and a buddy were framing a deck last summer, sun was blazing, and my laser was just a faint red dot on the plywood. @scott.jana knows what I'm talking about, we ended up digging out the old chalk box from the bottom of the truck. Funny thing is, my partner had never snapped a line before, so I had to show him how to hold the string tight and not let it sag. Took three tries to get a straight line, but we got there. Still felt good to do it the old way, even if it took twice as long as the laser would have. Ever had to teach someone a basic trick like that on the fly?
