My game night in Portland completely fell apart over a rules debate

We were playing a new area control game and two people got into a 45 minute argument about whether a specific action was allowed during the final scoring phase... the host just packed up the board while they were still yelling. How do you guys handle a table that's about to explode like that?

Read a tip once about putting a 5 minute timer on rules arguments... after that, make a group call and just write it down to check later.

That "group call" part is actually a bigger deal than people realize. You're basically voting on a temporary rule, and someone at the table always feels outvoted and bitter. What if the group gets it wrong and their character suffers for it? That good feeling from keeping the game moving might come at a real cost to someone's fun.

Saw a blog post from a DM named Kara. She had a rule about "rule votes". If a player's character is directly affected by the call, they get veto power. The group can outvote them on a general rule, like how cover works. But if it's about their rogue's sneak attack, their "no" stops the vote. Makes the person most at risk feel heard. Prevents that bitter feeling after.
