A guy at my Tuesday game night in Toledo told me my copy of Wingspan was 'too organized' and it stuck with me
We were setting up at his kitchen table when he pulled out his own box and everything was just loose in there, cards, eggs, dice all swimming around. He said my labeled baggies and little foam inserts made it feel less like a game and more like a filing cabinet. I laughed it off but then watched him dig for one specific bonus card for a solid 90 seconds while we all waited. Now I keep wondering if half the fun is the chaos and I've been doing it all wrong. Anyone else had someone call out their setup habits, and did you actually change anything?
The real issue isn't your baggies, it's that his bonus card took 90 seconds to find while three other people sat there doing nothing. That's not charming chaos, that's making everyone else pay for your mess. Here's the thing nobody brings up though, sorting everything perfectly can backfire on YOU. I labeled all my Wingspan eggs by color once and then spent two minutes hunting for the blue ones because I'd forgotten which bag I put them in. His system fails in front of the group, yours fails in your own head at 11pm when you just want to pack up and go to bed. The actual sweet spot is grouping by what gets grabbed together during play, not by what looks nice on a shelf.
What if the real fix isn't your system or his, but just picking up the game together as a group for two minutes instead of one person doing it alone? That way nobody's hunting for eggs at 11pm or making three people watch a bonus card search.
