Bought a 'bargain' anvil off a farm auction site and it's basically a doorstop
Spent $200 on what was listed as a 'heavy duty anvil' that turned out to be cast iron junk with a face softer than butter. I've already put a huge dent in it just trying to draw out some mild steel. Anyone know a good way to spot a fake anvil before you buy one?

Check the ring and rebound with a small steel ball bearing before you buy. Did the seller show you that or just post a picture of a rusty lump?

I learned that trick the hard way after buying a dud anvil last year. The ball bearing should bounce almost back to your hand on good steel. If it just thuds or barely moves, the face is too soft.

People get way too intense about anvil tests. Most hobbyists don't need lab-grade steel, a decent ring is fine. Not every project demands perfect rebound.
