Found a vintage Pyrex bowl for $3 but my mom laughed at me for decades of overpaying at retail

Picked up a Butterprint pattern bowl at a garage sale last Saturday for three bucks. She told me she had the same set in the 70s and paid $1.50 new - so I guess I'm the one who was doing thrifting wrong by waiting this long. Anyone else get roasted by family over a "deal"?

Funny you mention the whole "it's a collector thing" argument because that's exactly where I used to roll my eyes. I remember telling a buddy a few years ago that paying $40 for a Pyrex mixing bowl set was insane, like just go buy new ones at Target. Then I found that Butterprint bowl for three bucks and now I get it. I can't explain why holding something that's fifty years old feels different than buying the same thing off a shelf. Mom still says she can't believe people pay more than she did back then, but I pointed out a three dollar bowl is pretty close to her 1970s dollar fifty after you account for inflation. She didn't have an answer for that one.

Take your mom thrifting with you. That's the trick that worked for me. I dragged mine to an estate sale last summer and she spent twenty minutes just holding a Butterprint loaf dish, talking about how her neighbor had one just like it. She ended up buying it for four bucks and now she's the one checking Facebook Marketplace for Corningware. The whole "original price" thing goes away pretty quick when they start remembering stuff from their own past. Your mom probably remembers those bowls in her friend's kitchen, not on a shelf at Sears. That's worth more than the dollar fifty she's stuck on, trust me.

My mom gave me the same lecture when I paid $8 for a Corningware Cornflower casserole dish last month. She said she got hers as a wedding gift in 1968, which I guess is technically free but still stings a little. So what does your mom think about the prices people pay for vintage Pyrex now? Is she still stuck on the original retail price or does she get the whole "it's a collector thing" argument?
