I've been watering my tomatoes at high noon for three years like a total fool

My neighbor, Frank, finally asked me last Tuesday why I was 'cooking' my plants every day. I thought the hot sun would help the water soak in faster, but he showed me the white, scalded spots on the leaves from the water droplets acting like little magnifying glasses. I guess I just never put two and two together. Anyone else have a basic routine they were doing totally backwards?

My uncle used to wash his car in the direct sun, convinced it dried faster without spots. He just had a lot of water spots. The basic idea of faster drying isn't always right.

Oh man, I did the exact same thing with my peppers last summer. I mean, it makes total sense once someone points it out.

Actually read a gardening book that said the same thing. Watering in the morning is way better because it gives the leaves time to dry. That midday sun will absolutely fry them through the water droplets, just like you saw.
