I keep seeing people plant their tomatoes way too deep in the same hole every year

Yeah, the "plant them deep" advice gets taken too far sometimes. I read a piece from a university extension office that said burying more than the bottom two sets of leaves is overkill. It can actually slow things down because the stem has to work harder to root. They said a few inches deep is plenty.

Wait, so we've been drowning our tomatoes this whole time? I always went like halfway up the stem because my grandpa did it. But last year I tried just up to the first true leaves on a few plants as a test. Those ones actually caught up to the deep-planted ones in like two weeks and then made fruit at the same time. Felt like a waste of effort burying all that stem.
