That time I praised a coworker's haircut and it was a wig

Last Tuesday at the office in Austin, I walked up to Julie and said her new bob looked really sharp. She got real quiet and said 'thanks, it's for chemo.' How do you recover from that without making it worse?

Of course you should have noticed. Wigs have a telltale shine and the part never looks right. Maybe next time you'll pay closer attention before opening your mouth.

Yeah, that response feels kind of harsh. Not everyone's an expert on spotting a wig, and there's no shame in missing something like that. We all have different things we pay attention to, you know? I think it's better to just be understanding when someone doesn't catch onto something right away instead of making them feel bad about it.

I see what you're saying about the shine and the part, but not everyone is hyperaware of those details. Plenty of people don't study wigs enough to spot them that fast, so it's not always just not paying attention.
