Mistaking a stranger for my cousin at the mall was peak awkwardness
Tbh, I was so sure it was him that I didn't even double-check. I started chatting about our plans for the weekend, and he had this confused look. My face was burning when I finally noticed the differences.

Yikes, talk about an identity crisis.

But honestly, why is changing your identity always seen as a crisis? People grow and change all the time. What feels right at twenty might not fit at thirty, and that's a normal part of life. Trying on new versions of yourself shows you're paying attention and being honest about what works. Calling it a crisis just makes people feel bad for trying to grow. Maybe the real problem is expecting everyone to stay the same forever. Isn't it healthier to change when you need to?

Elliot950 has a point. We frame normal growth as something being wrong with a person. It puts pressure on everyone to pick one personality at twenty and stick with it forever, which is a weird expectation. Changing your mind about who you are just means you're paying attention. Calling that a crisis makes people feel broken for being alive. Maybe we should save the word crisis for actual disasters.
