I used to joke about forgetting names... after blanking on my cousin's at a family reunion, I don't find it funny anymore.

Honestly that sounds super awkward, I'd be cringing for days. Did your cousin notice you blanked, or did you manage to cover it? Tbh it's one of those things that's a joke until it happens at the worst possible time. Makes you way more nervous about meeting new people now, right?
