Back in the day, our climbing ropes were just thick garden hose

We'd tie knots in old hose for ascents, and it would kink and twist every time. Now with proper arborist rope, I laugh thinking how we ever managed. What's the funniest outdated tool you relied on before better gear came along?

Actually, that old hose method forced you to learn real skill and caution. Modern gear just lets people get sloppy, trusting the rope over their own judgement. You paid way more attention to every move when a kink could dump you, and that focus made you a better climber. The slick new stuff just creates a false sense of safety.

Yeah, the garden hose climbing idea is wild. My friend tried to use one to get onto his roof when we were teenagers. It gave way and he landed in his mom's flower bed, which was kinda funny but also super scary.
