I finally got my friend to watch that big space opera anime I love, and his take was nothing like mine

We watched the first three episodes together last night, and he spent the whole time asking questions about the ship's fuel source and political system instead of the characters (which is what hooked me). I tried explaining the emotional core, but he just kept circling back to the world-building logistics. Has anyone else had a watch buddy who just fixates on a totally different aspect of a show than you do?

Totally! People see different things in the same stuff.

Oh man, that's just how people ARE. My dad can't watch a movie without asking how the hero pays his bills.

That bit about the ship's fuel source made me smile. Some people just connect with the mechanics of a world first, like they're checking the blueprints before they move in. It can be a different path to the same story.
