Rock hunting after rain: why waiting a day works wonders

I noticed that visiting creek beds a day after heavy rain shows new stones. It took a while to see this pattern because I used to go too soon. Once I waited, I started finding quartz and agate that were washed down. For example, after a big storm last month, I picked up several nice pieces of petrified wood. The water moves things around and exposes fresh material. Now I check the forecast and plan my trips accordingly. This simple wait makes a huge difference in what I find.

Last spring at Miller Creek, I tried going right after rain and found mostly mud. The next day, the water had cleared and revealed all the good stuff that settled. So waiting that extra day really does make a difference.

From what I've read, heavy rain really shifts material around in creeks over a full day. The water has time to move lighter rocks and expose the heavier pieces you want. Your tip about waiting lines up with that perfectly.

Actually, I've had better luck going right as the rain stops... stuff is still moving then.
