Why does nobody talk about the hidden costs of 'free' freight audits?

I just lost over $2,500 on a shipment from Dallas to Seattle because I used a service that promised a free audit. They found a few small billing errors, but missed a massive accessorial charge for a liftgate that was wrong. On the other side, paying for a proper audit upfront might seem like a waste, but they catch the big stuff. Has anyone else been burned by a 'free' service and found a paid auditor that's actually worth it?
