I paid $1200 for a 'client magnet' website template that never brought in a single lead
Back in 2020, I was desperate for a professional look and bought this fancy template from a big name designer. It promised SEO built in and a 'proven' layout to convert visitors. I spent a whole weekend customizing it with my portfolio. After six months of crickets, I went back to my simple, ugly Squarespace site and got three calls in a week. Has anyone else fallen for a slick sales page for a tool that just didn't work for our actual freelance hustle?

Honestly... it's just a template. The real work is getting people to see it.

But what if the template itself is the problem? A lot of people see a format and just fill in the blanks without any real feeling behind it. Maybe the real work isn't just getting eyes on it, but making something worth looking at in the first place. If the core message is weak, no amount of views will fix that. You can have the best distribution in the world for an empty box.

Templates can be a good starting point, but they don't do the work for you. You still have to put real thought into the message. If the content is generic, people will scroll right past it even if they see it. The best reach in the world won't save something that feels empty. How do you make sure your template doesn't just lead to more noise?
