A trip to the Portland Japanese Garden totally changed how I see foliage
I visited the Portland Japanese Garden last month and honestly, I've never been big on using a lot of greenery in my arrangements. I always saw it as filler. But walking through there, the way they use moss, ferns, and even just different shades of green maple leaves as the main event was stunning. It wasn't just background noise. They'd create whole scenes with texture and shape using only greens, and it felt so calm and full. I spent about two hours just looking at one corner near the sand garden, where the moss was so thick and varied. Now I'm back at my shop trying to source more interesting local ferns and thinking about texture way more than color. Has anyone else had a place or a garden flip a basic idea they had about flowers on its head?

That garden sounds amazing. It's funny how a single experience can rewire your brain for the little things. I've seen it happen with people visiting a great bakery and suddenly caring about crust texture, or hearing a live band and noticing the bass line for the first time. You walk in with one set of eyes and walk out with another, noticing details that were always there but just background noise before. It makes the whole world feel a bit richer, you know?

Wait, the whole style changed? That's wild. I can't imagine a single trip doing that. What did they even buy there, a whole new closet? That place has some serious power.
