Used a 4-inch auger bit on a cedar post in clay soil and the hole just collapsed in on itself...

I figured a bigger hole would mean easier setting, but now I know you need a proper bell-bottom or at least a wider base in that kind of ground, or the concrete has nothing to grab onto.

Ugh, been there, my clay soil ate a post hole the same way last spring.

My clay yard needs a 12-inch base minimum.

So you went with a 4-inch bit for a cedar post. Did you try wetting the clay first to help it hold shape, or was it just a total cave-in right away?
