A client in Tampa told me my post spacing was off by a full inch
He was a retired engineer and measured every single one with a tape after we left... said the 8-foot sections looked 'visually wrong' because the posts were at 7 feet 11 inches, not a true 8. I argued it was close enough, but he showed me how the slight gap at the end made the whole run look pinched. Now I use a story pole for every layout job and mark the exact 96 inches, no more eyeballing it. Has anyone else had a picky client point out something small that actually made your work better?

My uncle was a machinist and he'd spot a 1/16th gap from across the room. That kind of eye is wild. I mean, the guy had a point though, it's crazy how a tiny bit adds up.

Honestly it's the same with anything you do a lot. My dad could tell if a picture frame was off by a hair just by glancing at it. You get so used to how things should look that the wrong thing just screams at you. It's like your brain builds a perfect template. Tbh I notice it now with typos in my own work, I can spot them instantly after stepping away for a minute. That focus changes how you see everything.

That heightened awareness spills into everything once you train it long enough. Your brain stops seeing the whole picture and starts flagging all the little imperfections other people just glide past. It's like having a permanent filter that makes the world feel slightly broken even when it's fine.
