I used to think you needed a ton of fabric for a good drape

I was working on a dress for a friend's wedding in Austin and kept adding more silk, thinking it looked flat. My professor from design school saw a pic and texted me 'less is more, try 2 yards max on the bias'. I cut it down and the drape was way better, it just flowed naturally. Anyone else have a rule they followed that turned out to be totally backwards?

My first big project I used like 5 yards of chiffon. It was a heavy mess. Now I know a lighter hand lets the fabric do its thing.

More fabric always means more drama though.

Right? "More fabric means more drama" is a trap. I did the same thing with a linen tablecloth and it just looked like a lumpy sack.
