Tried a new rasp on a tough quarter crack and it actually made things worse
Had a quarter crack on a big warmblood last week that was being a real pain. I grabbed a new Heller rasp I'd just bought, thinking the sharper teeth would help clean it up faster. Ended up taking off way too much wall and left the hoof too thin in that spot. Learned that a fresh, aggressive tool isn't always the right tool for a delicate fix. Anyone have a go-to method for cleaning up a bad crack without overdoing it?

What's your usual method for a crack that bad?

My go-to is a two-part epoxy filler, sanded flush once it's fully cured.

Epoxy's solid for a permanent fix. The real trick is the sanding. You need to start with a coarse grit to take down the bulk, maybe 80 grit. Then work your way up through 120, 220, and even 400 if you want it glass-smooth. Rushing the cure time is the most common mistake, it just gums up your paper.
