Just realized those cheap thermal paste spreads are actually a scam
I always figured those little plastic spreaders that come with thermal paste were fine for spreading it evenly. But last week I tried the pea method on a Ryzen 5 build, no spreading at all, and temps dropped 8 degrees C compared to my usual method. Turns out I was creating air pockets the whole time with that plastic card. Anyone else ditch those spreaders after a while?

A buddy of mine used those spreaders for years until he rebuilt his old Phenom setup and forgot to spread the paste... temps dropped by like 5c and he was kicking himself. He ditched them for good after that.

Tbh I had a buddy that same thing happened to. Straight up gave up on spreading after that.

Why are we all learning this lesson the hard way, right? I did the same thing with my last build, spent way too long trying to get that paste perfect with the plastic card and ended up with worse temps. Feels like we were just making extra work for ourselves for nothing. I totally get the frustration, you think you're doing it right and then find out it's actually making things worse. At least we know better now, but man it stings a little.
