Just realized my taping speed doubled after switching from a 6-inch to a 10-inch knife on a big apartment job last month. Is the bigger tool always better, or does it just create more mud waste?

That jump from a 6 to a 10 inch knife is huge for flats. You're covering more wall with each swipe, so of course you're faster. But bigger tools do make more waste, it's simple physics. A wider knife holds more mud, and you'll drop more on the floor and in your pan. For big open walls it's a win, but for small rooms with lots of cuts, you'll spend more time cleaning up your mess. It's about picking the right tool for the space, not just going bigger every time.

Waste difference seems pretty minor though.

But is the waste difference even that big? Seems like a minor trade off.
