Old timer's advice on cutter head maintenance saved my shift today

Guy with 30 years in the game told me to stop greasing the cutter head bearings every single day. He said over-lubing just traps sand and kills them faster. Switched to every three days last month and the machine ran smoother through this whole 2-mile stretch.

Every three days might work in dry conditions but I've seen guys destroy their cutter heads in wet sand running that schedule. Day two the grease gets washed out completely if you're cutting through mud or silt. I run mine daily but only three pumps max, not the full six like some manuals say. Too much grease packs the seals and forces dirt in, but no grease at all lets water and grit straight into the bearing race. You gotta feel the housing temp and listen for the squeal, not just follow a calendar.

@stella_lane absolutely nailed it, same thing happened to me last season running wet sand - felt like a dummy when I pulled the cutter head and found nothing but mud where the grease should've been. Switched to daily with just a couple pumps and the bearings finally stopped sounding like a dying animal.

Huh, I always ran mine every three days... guess I need to rethink that.
