I just realized I've drilled over 500 holes in my house since moving in three years ago.
It hit me when I was patching the last one from a failed towel rack bracket in the guest bathroom, and I started wondering if anyone else has ever actually counted their project holes.

Counting them would probably stress me out. My last place looked like swiss cheese by the time I moved, mostly from trying to hang things on plaster walls. I'd hit a lath strip and have to try again an inch over. Maybe it's just me but patching all those mistakes before selling felt like its own full time job.

Got a cheap stud finder that actually works on plaster and it saved me so much trouble. Started marking the lath strips with painter's tape before I even picked up a nail. Made all my patches at once with pre-mixed joint compound and a putty knife, sanded them down in one go. Still took a weekend but felt way less crazy than doing it piece by piece over months.

Marking the lath strips first is such a smart move. I used a small rare earth magnet on a string to find the nails in the lath when my stud finder was acting up. It finds them every time. Then I'd mark a whole vertical line with a pencil so I knew where the solid wood was for hanging anything heavy. It saves so much guesswork and extra holes.
