Unpopular opinion: duct tape is NOT a fix for everything

A plumber in Denver told me last Tuesday that using duct tape on a copper pipe leak actually made the damage way worse over 6 months. He showed me the green corrosion eating through the joint and said it trapped moisture instead of letting the pipe dry out. Has anyone else found a better emergency patch that won't wreck your pipes?

Wait isn't duct tape more for air leaks than water pipes?

Oh man, I once tried to fix a garden hose with duct tape and ended up with a sprinkler system in my garage!

Has anyone had better luck with that black rubber tape meant for plumbing? My neighbor Bill tried the duct tape route on an old spigot, and water found every tiny gap in about ten minutes. He ended up with a slow drip that soaked his tool bench and rusted some wrenches. Switched to a proper hose clamp and a rubber washer, and it held fine for years after that. Duct tape just doesn't have the stickiness for constant water pressure, especially cold water that makes the glue go brittle.
