That's a pretty common household hassle. It's not like the pipes burst or the ceiling caved in. A quick plunger fix usually handles it.

Wait, a whole new toilet? Like the guy had to rip out the porcelain throne and start from scratch? That seems wild for a simple clog unless he went full-on brute force with a hanger and cracked the bowl (I've seen it happen, trust me). I had a backup once that took two plunger sessions and a five-gallon bucket of hot water, but it was fine after that. Unless your friend lives in an old building with those finicky low-flow toilets that clog if you look at them wrong, that's a drastic jump from "plunger fix" to "full replacement.
