PSA: I was at the hardware store in Bellingham and noticed they're finally carrying that low-VOC deck stain I've been waiting for.
After checking their stock for about 8 months, I spotted two cans on the shelf yesterday and grabbed one to finally finish my backyard project.

Why are we all so obsessed with low-VOC stuff now? That deck stain probably costs twice as much and takes three times longer to dry. My neighbor used some last year and it washed off after one rainy season. The old school stuff works fine and actually lasts.

Your neighbor might have prepped the wood wrong or applied it in bad weather. The low-VOC stuff I used sealed perfectly and has held up for two seasons now. It does take a bit longer to dry, but the lack of fumes made working in my enclosed porch bearable. The old formulas give me a headache for days.
