My dad said to always use a 3/4 inch plywood subfloor, and I'm glad I listened

I was redoing my kitchen in my old house in Springfield and almost went with the cheaper 5/8 inch stuff to save a few bucks. He insisted the thicker plywood would stop any future tile cracking from floor flex. Two years later, not a single grout line has shifted, even with my heavy fridge. Anyone else have a piece of advice from a family member that saved a project?

Man, your dad was spot on. My uncle told me the same thing when I was putting down laminate in my old place. He said to never skip the underlayment, even though the box said it was optional. I almost didn't do it to save time. That floor was solid and quiet for years, while my neighbor who skipped it complained about every squeak. Good advice just sticks with you.

Actually, 5/8 inch is usually fine for tile if your floor joists are spaced right. The real key is making sure the subfloor doesn't bounce at all.

My grandpa's rule: always buy 10% extra tile for cuts.
