My aunt laughed at my sourdough starter and she had a point
She said "you've been feeding that thing for 8 months and your bread still comes out like a hockey puck" and honestly it stung because she was right. I was so proud of keeping the starter alive that I never stopped to ask if it was actually any good. Has anyone else had a family member call them out on something they were doing completely backwards?

Maybe the starter was fine and your flour or water was the real problem.

Eight months keeping a starter alive shows dedication, and that's worth more than a few flat loaves. Your aunt probably never bothered to even try growing her own yeast.

My first starter died after two weeks and I almost gave up on the whole thing. Seeing someone stick with it for eight months makes me realize I was too quick to judge and too impatient. I thought if it didn't work right away it wasn't worth doing, but you showed me that the real win is just not quitting. Now I'm back to feeding a new starter and I'm not going to let a few bad batches stop me either.
