Got told my digital art was too 'clean' and it actually helped

I posted a fantasy character piece here about six months ago. Someone commented, 'Your technique is solid, but it feels sterile. Like a 3D model render, not a painting.' At first I was annoyed, my whole thing was clean lines and perfect shading. But I kept thinking about it. I started adding a textured brush over my flats and lowering the opacity on my line art. It felt messy at first, but now my work has way more life. Anyone else get a piece of harsh feedback that turned out to be right?

What kind of texture brush did you end up using?

People get way too hung up on feedback from strangers online. It's just one person's opinion, not some universal truth. Your art was fine before and it's fine now, you just changed your style a bit. Calling it "sterile" sounds like they were trying too hard to sound deep.
