A fellow artist told me my character art looked 'flat' because I was shading with just black and white, so I switched to using a dark purple for shadows and a warm orange for highlights.
Has anyone else found a specific color combo that instantly added more life to their digital paintings?

Color theory is cool but maybe we're overthinking a simple shading problem.

Disagree with the idea that it's overthinking, @hayden_nelson85. That purple and orange shift is a perfect example of using color temperature to create depth. Pure black and white just makes things look muddy and dead. Choosing a cool color for shadows and a warm one for light mimics how light actually works in the real world. It's not just theory, it's a practical fix that adds instant volume. Sticking to simple black and white is what actually holds a lot of art back.
